2021 PCI Design Award Winner for Best Multi-Family Building

ATMI Precast Honored with 2021 PCI Design Award

Release Date

What a great way to start the new year! The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) has announced the 2021 PCI Design Award winners and ATMI Precast is honored to be among the 28 winners for our work on 1200 Clybourn. The project recieved accolades for "Best Multi-Family Building."

The PCI Design Awards program recognizes design excellence and construction quality using precast concrete. This awards program helps to showcase innovative and advanced technology and ideas. Three jury panels consisting of architects, engineers, and precast concrete producers selected a total of 28 winners and 12 honorable mentions.

ATMI Precast worked with general contractor McShane Construction, architect Pappageorge Haymes Partners and erector Waubonsee Development to make this project a success.

The designers had originally considered a brick and metal design, but precast concrete quickly emerged as the better choice. “The use of precast concrete started as a cost-savings strategy,” says Michael Henning, associate with Pappageorge Haymes Partners.

Once the decision was made to use precast concrete, his team reimagined the original design. “As part of the adaptation, ownership expressed an interest in using the material honestly and not disguising it,” Henning says. That led to the evolution of the aesthetic.

Key project attributes:

  • The decision to build an entirely precast concrete solution resulted in vibrant revitalization on a restricted budget.
  • The project earned two Green Globe awards for exemplary sustainable design.
  • Using a single precast concrete system and provider for the structure and enclosure led to cost and time savings.
